Thinking of studying a foreign language? German is a great choice!

• Why German?
When you study German at HKU, you will have the opportunity to spend at least 4 weeks at a university in Germany or Austria, which is not only great fun, but also highly educational.

German is spoken in Germany, Austria, Switzerland and also in other European countries – it has more native speakers in Europe than any other European language except Russian.

Germany, Austria and Switzerland are popular holiday destinations.

Germany is a major trading partner of Hong Kong and China. A knowledge of German might be useful for your future career.

Studying German also complements well other Arts subjects such as linguistics, history, comparative literature, translation, fine arts, Global Creative Industries, philosophy, music, European Studies and Language and Communication.

We also have non–Arts students from Social Sciences, Journalism, Business, Science and Law who find our courses and programmes useful for their studies.

In recent years, more and more students have also been engaging in postgraduate studies in Germany, as German universities and scientists enjoy a very high reputation worldwide.

• Is it difficult?
German – like English - belongs to the Germanic group of languages and since many of you have already studied English for a long time this experience will make the study of German easier.

You may also contact us directly by writing to the German Programme Director Mr. Urbanski at urbanski@hku.hk with any questions you may have with regard to our courses or to make an appointment to speak to us in person.

We wish you all the best for your studies at HKU and we are looking forward to meeting you in our German courses!
